Unifying SU Australia: Merging Nine Entities' Systems into One

The Problem: Prior to May 2021, Scripture Union in Australia operated as a federated network of separate state and territory organisations. This decentralised structure led to significant inefficiencies and limited national strategic capabilities, hindering our ability to engage on a national level and establish a broader presence for communications, marketing, and fundraising.

Key Contributions

  • Program Managed Mission Systems Integration: Led the strategic planning and execution of numerous complex projects to consolidate nine separate entities’ systems and data into a single, national platform for SU Australia over a three-year period.
  • Cultivated High-Performing Team: Built and fostered a cohesive and productive Mission Systems team from diverse backgrounds, providing professional growth, training in key methodologies (including business analysis and PRINCE2 project management), and fostering strong stakeholder communication.
  • Drove Strategic Systems Development: Oversaw the successful implementation of critical mission-enabling systems, including national CRM unification, event management, volunteer management, and corporate risk solutions.
  • Ensured Business Continuity during Transition: Maintained essential business processes and technical support for ongoing operations throughout the merger, managing critical data flows and technical infrastructure while simultaneously delivering complex integration projects.
  • Provided Interim Leadership: Stepped into an Acting Group Director role for Mission Support, maintaining departmental productivity and strategic direction during a leadership transition, including sourcing critical external expertise for the marketing team.

Lapsing Series Report

The Problem: SU QLD was struggling to report on the effectiveness of its reactivation marketing automation journey.

Key Contributions

  • Mapping the relationships between the data types.
  • Developing the data integration to bring the data from Salesforce into BigQuery.
  • Writing the SQL query to join the data and ensure we only report on income from individuals once they began the marketing journey.
  • Designing the Data Studio report to visualise the data in a way that makes sense to people viewing it.

Soulution

The Problem: Structured problem solving is a great way to help the human mind find solutions for seemingly difficult problems. However, there currently isn’t a website or app that makes this easy to do on the go.

Key Contributions

  • Designed mockup in Figma.
  • Built the web app in React using Google’s Firestore and Firebase Auth.
  • Configured the automated build process from git push to live.
  • Deployed for testing and personal use at soulution.cloud

Pocket Query

The Problem: One night, my boss messaged me asking me for some statistics and I wished there was a way I could quickly query the results from my smartphone.

Key Contributions

  • Designed app in Figma.
  • Affordances for multiple projects, saved queries, running ad-hoc queries.
  • Full screen query editor, full screen results or a split view for both.
  • Ability to quickly reference the schema along with auto-complete and intellisense.

Talend Data Integration

The Problem: SU QLD wanted to consolidate several data sources into Salesforce in order to get more complete picture of each person’s involvement with the organisation.

Key Contributions

  • User requirements gathering and stakeholder engagement.
  • Proposed options and recommendations for the right solution.
  • Worked with vendors to setup the system and internal IT to setup resources in Google Cloud.
  • Built out a data integration job that brings Salesforce Marketing Cloud SMS send history into Salesforce.

About

Having topped my IT classes at school and going on to study multimedia, I started building websites professionally in 2001.

In 2008, I joined the team at a non-profit — SU QLD — and have been working in various roles since. In June 2021, SU QLD was merged into SU Australia, along with 6 other states and 2 additional organisations.

As Group Manager, Mission Systems, I lead a team that bridges the gap between what people need on the ground and the technical and compliance requirements of the organisation. This role has strategic oversight over mission enabling systems, including business analysis, project management and analytics.

Together with IT and the Support Hub teams, we help to create, improve and transform the digital experiences of over 1,100 staff, over 7,500 volunteers and millions of young Australians and their families.

My tools of the trade are a Macbook Pro, music, coffee and any software package or programming language that delivers the best outcomes for the end-user.
